Acupuncture for Prenatal Care

Acupuncture is an amazing form of prenatal care and can support you through this joyful, but often trying experience. From morning sickness to swollen feet, and everything in between, acupuncture will enhance your pregnancy. Feel reassured that you’re taking care of yourself — as you grow another human being.

Acupuncture can help you to

  • Eliminate severe fatigue
  • Stop morning sickness
  • Reduce acid reflux
  • Alleviate musculoskeletal pains (sciatica, low back pain, pelvic pain)
  • Address painful dysmenorrhea
  • Prevent miscarriage
  • Quell irritability, crankiness, and impatience
  • Calm prenatal anxiety and depression
  • Sleep better and stop insomnia
  • Moisten dryness anywhere — dry skin, eyes, lips, throat, mucus membranes, vaginal secretions, dry/difficult stools or constipation
  • Reduce swollen ankles
  • Alleviate muscle cramps, numbness and tingling in extremities
  • Alleviate breast tenderness
  • Alleviate headaches
  • Eliminate pregnancy brain fog

All of these signs and symptoms can be effectively addressed with acupuncture and herbal medicine.

We highly recommend scheduling your acupuncture treatment plan for prenatal care when you first know you want to have a baby. If you’re in your first, second, or third trimester — we can still help you. To get the best results, we encourage mamas to start their prenatal care as soon as possible.

We provide care packages for basic home care and labor preparation. Consider Nicole as part of your birth team.

Acupuncture for Labor Preparation and Birth

Before and during early labor, acupuncture therapy can assist with cervical ripening, pelvic floor relaxation, and the initiation of contractions — which is extremely useful a week or two before the active phase of labor.

Acupuncture therapy can also be incredibly helpful in reducing pain and supporting your birth to go more smoothly.

Acupuncture can help you to

  • Promote blood flow to the uterus and increase amniotic fluid — when combined with moxibustion
  • Turn a breech baby
  • Enhance cervical ripening
  • Invite pelvic floor relaxation
  • Initiate birth contractions
  • Reduce pain
  • Support a smooth delivery

Acupuncture for Breech Baby

Acupuncture and moxibustion (moxa) therapies are quintessentially known for helping turn a breech baby! For optimal results, it’s best to receive treatments at week 33 and week 34. In some cases, it can still be successful at weeks 36-38.

In situations where the baby doesn’t turn and Western manual manipulation is required, the baby turns more easily and at a higher success rate if mama receives acupuncture and moxa treatments beforehand.

Acupuncture is for labor preparation and is not an alternative to Western medicine during an emergency

Acupuncture induction is not a substitute for Western induction

Acupuncture is a supportive therapy for labor preparation and birth and works to optimize maternal conditions for going into labor. Acupuncture therapy should not be confused with a Western induction that provides immediate results.

Acupuncture anesthesia is not a substitute for epidural anesthesia

Acupuncture is best known for pain relief. However, it shouldn’t be considered as an equal substitution for epidural anesthesia. Though acupuncture can play a significant role in reducing pain, it doesn’t provide the painless birth often associated with an epidural.

Acupuncture is not a substitute for a Cesarean section

Acupuncture encourages the progress of a vaginal birth. In the event of labor progress stalling, if mama and/or Baby’s health are at risk, a Cesarean section may be necessary. The most important goal is for mama and Baby to be safe.

Acupuncture for Postpartum Recovery

Acupuncture will speed up your postpartum recovery and can help with so many of the challenges you face after giving birth. From energy levels to alleviating stress, bleeding, and pain, acupuncture can support you when you need help the most.

Acupuncture can help you to

  • Be protected from cold and wind conditions — when combined with moxa, acupuncture will proactively warm and nourish your lower back and abdomen.
  • Recover from Cesarean Section (C-Section)
    • Acute recovery, within a week after surgery — minimize scar pain
    • Scar therapy, any time after 10 weeks (even years later)
    • Labor preparation for the next labor
  • Alleviate afterpains and perineal pain
  • Clear constipation, hemorrhoids, and heal tears faster
  • Encourage a healthy milk supply in lactation
  • Stop breast infections due to plugged milk ducts — mastitis
  • Alleviate PMS, painful periods, irregular cycles, and a heavy flow
  • Reestablish a healthy menstrual cycle
  • Diminish urinary incontinence when you sneeze or laugh
  • Decrease chronic fatigue and exhaustion
  • Reduce postpartum baby blues, anxiety, and depression
  • Improve sleep
  • Be a happy and healthy mama!

All of these signs and symptoms can be effectively addressed with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

We highly recommend scheduling your postpartum care plan weeks before delivery, since your focus will be on Baby after you give birth. To get the best results, we encourage mamas to start treatment 2-6 weeks after birth for postpartum care.

If you’re six months or a year in postpartum and identify with any of these issues, we can still help you. It is not uncommon to experience symptoms related to postpartum up to two years after birth. It’s never too late — let’s design your wellness plan today!
